Okla Rae Brewer

May 11, 1938 — October 16, 2019

Chickasha

Okla Rae Brewer was born on May 11, 1938, in Rush Springs, Oklahoma to Mary Francis (née Miller) Roe and William Thomas Rady Roe. Okla entered into Heaven's gates on October 16, 2019.

Okla grew up in Chickasha, attending Chickasha Public Schools. Okla married Lewis Leon Brewer on April 19, 1958 in Gainesville, Texas. They settled in Shamrock, Texas shortly thereafter, giving birth to two sons, Tony and Mike. They relocated to Oklahoma in 1975 to be near family, remaining in the area the rest of their lives.

Okla was renowned for her love for Christ and sharing that love in her music. Anyone she met for the first time would often leave that encounter with a cassette tape of her Gospel music. She loved her family, particularly her grandsons, whom she would indulge like royalty. She was known as Nanny Okla, not just by her grandsons, but also by all of their friends.

She gave selflessly to her community in the form of her voice in song at revivals and funerals, also visiting nursing homes, prisons and homes for the disabled, providing them with joyous music. She was always a staple in her church and loved to share her personal testimony. She had a deep love and compassion for the downtrodden, often taking those down on their luck into her own home until they could get back on their feet.

Okla was preceded in death by her husband Lewis Leon Brewer, son Michael Lewis Brewer, nephew Michael Dillon Brewer, father William Thomas Rady Roe, her mother, Mary Francis Busby, brother Bill Roe, sister Alzora Byford, and brother E.J. Busby. She is survived by her son Tony Brewer, grandsons Lance, Adam, and Tyler Brewer, daughter-in-law Trish Brewer, sister Guwanna Moore, sister Debbie Brown, brother Doug Long, former daughter-in-law Tammy Taylor, and former daughter-in-law Sandy Brewer.

A life celebration service will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2019, at 11:00 AM at Southern Hills Baptist Church, 2501 W. Country Club Road, Chickasha, Oklahoma.
