Mary Ellen Skaggs was born on March 10, 1935 to Ben and Iris Shook. She went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, November 27th at the age of 85. She was born in the Dutton community north of Verden. Mary, her parents, and siblings moved to their farm located 6 ¼ miles east of Tuttle on HWY 37 in 1942.
Before starting Tuttle Schools in the 5th grade, she attended Waldon Schools which was a 1 mile walk north of their farm. Mary was active in sports, FHA, and the band where she was known as "Buddy's Marching Girl". She graduated in 1953 from Tuttle Schools. She graduated on a Friday, left on her senior trip on Sunday, returned on Friday, got married on Sunday, and was plowing cotton on Tuesday. She was not too fond of tractor driving because it was too slow.
Mary and Buddy were married on Sunday, May 24th, 1953 in Tuttle at her parent's home. The Skaggs moved to their small 5 room house north of Tuttle that Buddy bought in 1950. They raised 3 children in one small bedroom before building a new brick house in 1966. Buddy and Mary ran a small dairy for 17 years. It was a good living, helping to build their new house and to keep on farming. You very seldom found one without the other. Mary worked alongside Buddy driving tractors, hauling wheat/hay and running the dairy.
They loved traveling with their hometown friends, always making new friends along the way. They were very involved in their community and helped in the founding of the Tuttle Fair. Mary was secretary of the fair board for 15 years. Buddy and Mary were the biggest fans of Tuttle Schools where they were always at a sporting event or stock show supporting their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Mary was a long time member of First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and served on various committees.
