Mary Douchinsky
January 11, 1922 — July 6, 2018
Mary Elizabeth Douchinsky was born on January 11, 1922 in Hale Township, OK to Joseph L. and Ida H. Hemming. She died peacefully on July 6, 2018 at the age of 96.
Mary attended school in Alden, OK and nursing school in San Antonio, TX. She later served in the Navy during WWII as an Ensign in the Navy Nurse Corps at Camp Pendleton, CA. While stationed there, she met her future husband John Joseph Douchinsky. John and Mary were wed on November 9, 1946. After 15 years of marriage and 7 children, John passed in July 1961.
Mary moved her family to Chickasha, OK and continued her nursing career at Grady Memorial Hospital retiring in 1989.
Mary was a lifelong member of the Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters of America. She enjoyed quilting, sewing and gardening. She also enjoyed her service work with the church making communion calls to the shut-ins well into her late 80's.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Joseph Douchinsky, brothers George, James and Edward Hemming; sister Nellie and son, Thomas Douchinsky.Survivors include her children, Irene Hicks, Michael, Paul, John (Jenny), James (Debbie) and Susan; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and her brothers Herbert and John Laurence Hemming.
Throughout her life, Mary was compassionate toward those who needed help, born out by the fact they she became a nurse in the first place. She was always helpful to all including her family when the need arose. Mary was a woman of courage and faith and it was her faith that carried her through several tragic times. She had the courage and commitment to family to lead a life well lived. She will be sorely missed.
