Leon Poag passed away peacefully on May 24, 2020. Leon was born January 3, 1931, in Ninnekah, Oklahoma to Roy and Vera Poag. He was married to Patsy Lewis Poag on September 29, 1979, and they lived in Chickasha for 20 years before retiring and moving to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Leon was a soft-spoken, kind gentleman who loved to help his family and friends. Leon is survived by his wife Patty; son Steve and wife Dana; the mother of his children, Delores Elkouri; grandchildren Megan Boswell, Lauren Savage (Jonathan Rodgers); great grandchildren Madison and Kaiden Boswell, and Olen Rodgers. Leon was predeceased by his daughter, LeDonna Poag; his father and mother, Roy and Vera Poag; and two brothers, Harold and Donald Poag.
Leon began his first retail business in Blanchard, Oklahoma in 1962, as Blanchard Seed and Feed. He then established Poag Grain, Inc. which included grain elevators in Amber, Chickasha, Verden, Pocasset and Cordell. Later, the company also added Pro Ag Chem, Inc., a fertilizer operation in Chickasha.
Leon served on the Board of Directors of the First National Bank, University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma Foundation, Chickasha Rotary Club, Chickasha Chamber of Commerce, Chickasha Community Concert Association, Oklahoma Plant Food Educational Society and the Oklahoma Grain and Feed Association.
Leon was also involved with People to People International as well as New Life Challenge and Youth New Life Training Center, associations associated with Teen Challenge, a national drug and alcohol rehabilitation ministry.
Recognitions included being named to Oklahoma State University's Hall of Fame in 1983 as Outstanding Grain Dealer, Oklahoma's Outstanding Fertilizer Dealer in 1986, and was also recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International.
As a member of the First Assembly of God in Chickasha, and later, Capitol Hill Assembly in Oklahoma City, he served 29 years in Chickasha as Adult Class Teacher, church Treasurer for 17 years and church Deacon for 5 years. He and his wife, Patty, were also active as leaders and facilitators for Divorce Care Recovery.
Services will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday, May 28, 2020 at Capitol Hill Assembly of God Church, 2400 W Interstate 240 Service Rd, Oklahoma City, OK. under the direction of Sevier Funeral Home, Chickasha, OK.
