Chickasha

Memorial service will be held at the First Christian Church in Chickasha Oklahoma on Tuesday, April 4, at 1 PM under the direction of Sevier Funeral Home.  Immediately following the service, there will be a come-and-go reception in the church fellowship hall.  All are invited.

Judy Lynn Mitchell Duprez was born February 18, 1946.  She was the daughter of William and Era Mae Mitchell of Wewoka, Oklahoma, and the sister of Marla Mitchell Balentine.  She grew up attending Wewoka Public Schools.   She was active in just about everything Wewoka High School had to offer.  She graduated in 1964 as Co-Valedictorian and Yearbook Queen.  She attended the University of Oklahoma where she was an honors student and involved in many campus activities and received several awards. During her senior year, on December 23, 1967, she married Conrad Duprez and they built a life and a family together for 55+ years.  After earning her Masters Degree, she pursued a doctorate, but before finishing her dissertation, she decided that what she really wanted to do was teach high school students.

Judy was a high school English teacher at Chickasha High School from 1975 to 2014.   She loved her students.  She loved the subject matter she taught.  She loved everything about being a teacher.  For those who might be interested, a Facebook page was created to allow former students and friends to write reminiscences about Mrs. Duprez.   The Facebook group is entitled, "Friends & Students of Judy Duprez." As much as she achieved as a classroom teacher, she was also active at the state and national levels, serving as President of the Oklahoma Council of Teachers of English (OCTE) and as Secondary Chair of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), with a specialty in working with schools that were dealing with pressure from censorship groups.   Later, she spent many years as an adjunct instructor at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma where she trained secondary teachers.

Local organizations also need great leadership, and so in these later years, Judy was on the Chickasha Public Schools Foundation, President of PEO, and President of the Library Board.

First Christian Church of Chickasha has been her church home for nearly 50 years. She served as a Deacon, Elder, chaired just about every committee the church offers, and served as President of the Disciples Women. She was also actively involved in the work of the Emergency Food Pantry and the Chickasha Soup Kitchen.

She was a world traveler. She began by taking students to Europe in 1979 and did so for numerous years. It was important to her that young people see other cultures and understand that not everybody thinks exactly the same. In later years, she and Conrad traveled extensively.  She particularly enjoyed going to Egypt to see the ancient Egyptian cultural sites.

Judy would tell you that the great joy of her life though, was her family - husband Conrad, daughter Danielle, son Mitchell, daughter-in-law Laura, daughter Emily, and son-in-law Philip. She adored her five grandchildren,  Miles Duprez, Liam Emmett, Tess Duprez, Sutton Emmett, and Jane Duprez.  She was the ultimate Nana! She loved her friends and particularly enjoyed beating the boys at spades!

If you wish, some of Judy's favorite charities included:

The National Tuberous Sclerosis Association ( www.tsalliance.org )

The Chickasha Emergency Food Pantry

(PO Box 1203 Chickasha)

The First Christian Church of Chickasha (memorial fund)
