Jerry grew up in the Marlow and Oklahoma City area where he graduated Valedictorian from Southeast Highschool. He then went on to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Physics from the University of Oklahoma before moving to Dallas, TX to work as a researcher for Lone Star Gas. It wasn't long until he realized that his true passion lay in preaching the Gospel and began his 63-year journey as an Evangelist for the Church of Christ.
He met Sheryl McKay on December 20, 1960, (about 9:30 pm) and they were married on May 11, 1962. Their children were all born in different cities as he moved to work with churches in towns across Oklahoma. Michael was born in Durant in 1963, Rebecca in El Reno in 1965, Stephen in Okmulgee in 1968, and Deborah in Chickasha in 1972. Two years later they settled in Lindsay where they would live for the next 45 years and raise their children and grandson, Brandon.
Jerry has been an Evangelist for the Church of Christ since 1960. During those 64 years, he helped establish 21 congregations and held over 500 Gospel meetings and revivals across the United States. He trained new Evangelists, Teachers, and teaching Singing Schools throughout the region and has been considered a Teacher and Peace Maker in the Church being instrumental in bringing hundreds of souls to Christ. He has also been involved in Mission Work in Nigeria making 2 trips and establishing and mentoring native Evangelists to further the work in their own country.
In addition to his Evangelistic work, he and his wife owned and operated Lindsay Carpet for about 30 years while also remodeling and selling around 40 houses. His passions included following OU football, Dr. Pepper, writing songs and playing guitar, going to garage sales, and spending time with the Love of his life, Sheryl. He loved playing with the grandkids and great-grandkids, taking them on rides on the John Deere tractor. As they have aged, Jerry and Sheryl have been surrounded by family and friends and you could often hear him say, "I expected to be lonely in my old age, but I am blessed to have constantly been close to loved ones."
Jerry has been preceded in death by his parents, Albert Merlin and Mildred Pauline (Murray) McCorkle and one brother, Kenneth McCorkle of Burleson, TX.
