Durl Ray “Wimpy” Burton passed away peacefully at home on March 31, 2026 leaving behind a legacy of faith, family, dedication and laughter. He was born on April 30, 1934 in Alex, Oklahoma, to Hugh and Viola Burton, and was raised in the Alex community he always called home.
On July 18, 1953, Durl married the love of his life, Loretta Cox, at Hawkins Freewill Baptist Church. Together they built a life rooted in love and devotion, raising three sons: David Burton, Barry Burton and Steven Burton, Sr.
Durl had a lifelong passion for farming, often talking about his farming career beginning at just two years old alongside his father. His love for the land defined much of his life. In addition to farming, he worked for the Department of Agriculture in Soil Conservation as a surveyor before retiring and dedicating himself to caring for his father and the family farm. Alongside his wife, he also raised and raced horses for many years, traveling across the country and making cherished memories along the way.
A devout man of God, Durl lived his life grounded in faith and looked forward to the day he would meet Jesus. He loved his family deeply-especially his beloved Loretta.
He was proceeded in death by his wife, Loretta Burton; his son Steven Burton, Sr.; his parents Hugh and Viola Burton, his sister and brother-in-law, Loretta Jo “Snookie” and Carl Fancher; and his in-laws, Everett and Xelpho Cox.
He is survived by his sons: David Burton and Barry Burton and wife Leigh Ann, daughter-in-law Robin Burton; and his grandchildren: Jennifer Burton, Linsey Reynolds and husband Bert; Ashley Foster and husband Garrett; Whitney Sikes and husband Jeff; Steven Burton, Jr. and wife Sheri; Courtney Burton; Veronica Roberts and Ronald Roberts. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren: Mallory and Ella Burton; Samuel Sikes; Zane and Briggs Burton; Emmerson, Creed and Sloane Foster and Liam Owings. He had many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends he considered his family as well.
