Doffeene Rowena Moore

June 10, 1918 — January 9, 2015

Doffeene Rowena Dutton Moore (better known as Granny Moore) was born in a tent in Bailey, Grady County, Oklahoma, on June 10, 1918. She died January 9, 2015 surrounded by her family in her own home in Alex. In the words of Edgar Lee Masters in his Spoon River Anthology, "At ninety-six I had lived enough, that is all, and passed to a sweet repose." Doffeene's father, Scott Washington Dutton, was born in Georgia and traveled to Indian Territory as a young man. It was there he met Mary Rowena Wright, born In the Territory to Hardin William Wright III and Mary Louisa Nail. Scott and Rowena married in Indian Territory in 1901 and Doffeene was the only daughter of five surviving children born to them. Doffeene attended school at the 72 School southeast of Rush Springs and in Cushing, Oklahoma. On November 19, 1933, she married George Tolbert "Tol" Moore at Rush Springs and later joined the Baptist Church at Chitwood, Oklahoma. After seeing her five sons and one daughter through Rocky Point and Alex Schools, Doffeene worked as a dietician at Shannoan Springs Nursing Home in Chickasha. She was a pioneer, a poet, a teller of stories and a well-loved mother, grandmother, and friend to all. Doffeene was preceded in death by both parents and her brothers, Melton, Ligia, Allen and Cleo Dutton; her husband, Tol Moore on January 22, 1977, and one son, Billy Ray Moore. She is survived by her half-sister, Anna Lee Huff, of Dallas, Texas; a sister-in-law, "Ludie" Mae Dutton, of Marlow, Oklahoma; four sons and their wives: Eskel and Rose Moore of Lavaca, Arkansas; Wayne and Sue Moore of Alex; Jimmy and Louise Moore of Duncan; and Jesse and DiAnn Moore of Shell Knob, Missouri; and one daughter, Joyce Moore of Alex. Doffeene leaves behind many grandchildren including Teresa Moore of Alex; Mike Moore of Coal Center, Pennsylvania; Billy Ray Moore, Jr., of Chickasha; Cathy Swanson of Alex; Wesley Todd Moore of Lavaca, Arkansas; Greg Moore of Alex; Brian Moore of Duncan, Michael McEntire of Lavaca, Arkansas; Martin Hobbs of Bridgecreek, John Tolbert Moore of Alex, John Wesley Moore of El Largo, Texas; Lee Moore of Marion, Arkansas; Aaron Hobbs of Bridgecreek; Neal Moore of Mount Vernon, Missouri, Brandi Lofdahl of Kansas; Chad Moore of Greenwood, Arkansas; Patty Samples of Chickasha and Terry Cunningham and Jimmy Moore. Doffeene had a multitude of great-grandchildren and, by her own count, had 24 great-great-grandchildren.
